Jimmy Buffett isn't always right

"Wrinkles will only go where the smiles have been"
Jimmy Buffett

Au contraire, Jim. Last time I checked, my forehead doesn't smile and never has.

Problem is, I am 26 years old and suffering from wrinkles. Now, let me say- I have no one to blame but myself. After many years of baking like a rotisserie chicken in a tanning bed- I have almost made it through my first winter, UV free. (ahem, Mom- did you hear that?)

add that with the occasional far too often "squinting of the eyes" to fix forgetting my glasses or contacts and we have a situation brewing above the brows.

SO- I need your help. I have done some research and have found these 2 contraptions that are supposed to help.

I've heard really good things about this one but I am so cheap frugal for $120, it better make me look 18.

This handy guy is only $30. Is the other really worth the $90 more?

so torn. and wrinkled. blah.

I said Yes!

This past weekend was busy to say the least! Friday, we started the day bright and early and met with a photographer. From the second I walked into their studio I was sold. Their work is absolutely breathtaking! Since Dan and I no longer live in St. Louis, I really want to have pictures taken at very obvious St. Louis landmarks. Needless to say, they had me at their jaw dropping pictures under the arch and throughout Forest Park.

Next up....... wedding dress shopping! I tried on about 17 or so dresses and found "mine" at about dress #8. I am glad I found it right there in the middle because I knew it didn't feel like any of the other dresses I had put on and the remaining 9 didn't hold a candle to it.

I tried on dresses with dramatic details

via rivini.com

and I tried on dresses with pretty names like this one- which brings me to my next point. I have since found out that female designers tend to name their styles (i.e Nya or Celine) while male designers tend to number them (i.e 2045). A critic to the male designers out there- it's a lot more fun to refer to your dress as "Celine" rather "Style #4593".

anywho. Onto the next portion of the weekend!

Bridesmaid dresses!

While browsing on the internet- this Alfred Sung dress was my front runner. I was certain she was going to be it.

and then this Amsale dress came into the picture and the crowd went wild.

But then this green dress not only through a wrench in the system as far as dresses went but the color did as well. I went into Saturday thinking I was going to have short, champagne, dupioni dresses and came out with long, green, chiffon dresses. You can't tell in this picture but the color is gorgeous and perfect for fall.

Sunday was a little bit more relaxing. The family got together to celebrate Hank, my nephew's, baptism. But I think he deserves his own post!

Until next time :)

work week already?

A little funny to start your work week after a long weekend... This one never gets old. Enjoy!

While the boy is away....

Dan was on a business trip this weekend... so I had an entire weekend to get a ton of stuff done and get some much needed R&R in since I had been sick the entire week.

First and foremost, I kept the thermostat at a warm and toasty 78 the entire time and never once heard about what that does to an electric bill.... it's the little things in life, right?

Organized and cleaned and organized some more. I suffer from "throw-it-away-itis", my sister and I both do actually. If I can't find a place for something- it goes. Dan said he is going to need a shed to hold all of the things he wants to keep so that they stay out of harms way. I went through all of the drawers and brought a huge basket to Goodwill. I feel much lighter and can finally walk through the closet!

Made some candied pecans for a salad that I could eat morning, noon and night. (salad with candied pecans-hows that for an oxymoron) Not too bad for my first time cooking anything candy related.

enjoyed the beautiful weather with this lil man. Took long walks and played fetch I throw the ball and Mac stops halfway so I end up retrieving it myself.

watched a chick flick.... I give this one a 4 out 5. I could have done without the teenager being obsessed with the father of 3 story line but other than that it was pretty funny.

and enjoyed plenty of uninterrupted/I don't have to share them with anyone puppy snuggles. I may be back on top with the "who I like more mom vs dad" situation after this weekend :)

Happy Monday!

A house Into A Home

When I have spare thoughts now a days, I cant help but think about trading in apartment living for a house and more importantly, our house. I'm dying for more space and I can NOT wait to decorate. I have so many ideas but just cant execute them here.

So- in the meantime- come take a tour of my imaginary home!

No Siesta, Let's Fiesta... the light version.

The grocery store by the house sometimes has a really good deal on previously frozen chicken. The catch is since it has already been frozen, you need to cook it that day. Of course, the days they have it- dinner is either, already planned or cooked.

I went last week and sure enough- same story. So I got to thinking what I could make but use throughout the week.

I decided to slow cook it for shredded chicken tacos. I don't have a crock pot but found a way to cook it without and get the same effect.

Light Chicken Tacos
1 lb skinless boneless chicken breast
chicken marinade seasoning*
15 oz water/beer/apple juice/chicken broth
1 taco seasoning packet
Whole wheat carb Balance tortilla
reduced fat mexican cheese
water

Chicken Marinade Seasoning
1 tbs. garlic powder
1 tbs. cumin
1 tbs. salt
1 tbs chilli powder
1 tbs paprika
1/2 tbs oregano
1/2-1 tbs cayenne

Trim the chicken and marinate with the seasoning (this can be used a taco seasoning as well). Since I needed to cook it- I only marinated it for about 6 hours but you can marinade at long as you would like.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees

In a dutch oven pot or something comparable, lightly brown the chicken on the stovetop over medium/high heat. Do this for about 5-10 minutes. As far as the liquid goes, you can use all water- some water with some beer, some water with some chicken broth, some water with some apple juice- really whatever you have in the house works. I have always just used water and another one of the ingredients. Make sure that your chicken is completely submerged in whatever liquid concoction you decide on and bring to a near boil.

Place lid and cook in oven for an hour to an hour and a half. (check at an hour - if you can shred it easily- it is finished)

Since it wasn't for dinner that night- I stored it and it made for a very fast and delicious weekday dinner.

When you go to make your tacos, do so like you normally do. Follow the instructions on the seasoning packet for the meat and then fix your taco the way you like it.

I used 1/2 a serving of the cheese, 1/2 serving of light sour cream and the carb balance wheat tortilla along with lettuce and my taco was only 200 calories and 10 g of fiber. Not too bad if I say so myself.

Enjoy!

First Dance

During halftime of the Saints game this weekend, I managed to squeeze in a few potential "first dance" songs (lucky guy, huh?). I think we may have selected one but it's still pretty early in the game so there is a possibility it changes.

Here are the ones we previewed:

Louis Armstrong "La Vie En Rose" - cut to about 1:35... I dont think I could do the long part at the beginning with no words.

Joshua Radin "You Got What I Need"- thank you Grey's Anatomy for this jessie jewel.

Louis Armstrong "A Kiss To Build A Dream On"- pretty dang good.

Adele "To Make You Feel My Love" sigh. She is so good. (This is one of those songs where you are convinced you are a good singer so you belt it out right there with her)

pigskin heaven

If you have turned on ESPN in the past week and a half it has been impossible to not see New Orleans. In the past week we have hosted 2 home football games, the Sugar Bowl and on Monday, the big BCS showdown. (did I mention LSU is in that?)

Thursday night as I was watching TV, the regular viewing was interrupted to let us know that the LSU bus had in fact weathered through a flat tire but that was not going to get them down on their 45 minute trek to the Big Easy. We watched the entire team file off the bus, following a traditional second line and head into the hotel. With every loud purple suit that came out of the bus, I thought to myself that this may have been the most preposterous news coverage. But, then again I watched every second of it.

The excitement is contagious. When I passed by the Superdome Friday and saw the ginormous Alabama trailers and the even bigger LSU trailers (you didn't think they would be outdone on their own stomping ground, did you?) I couldn't help but take it all in. ESPN shows being filmed on balconies, Purple, Black and Gold-everywhere.

Oh- and did I mention that Mardi Gras season kicked off on Friday?

With last night's beating on Detroit, LSU fans everywhere, and King Cakes galore, this city is on cloud nine. I am hoping Tuesday morning we are still up there. I am by no means a huge LSU fan, but when in rome...

Bridal Bootcamp

Guilty as charged. I am your standard bride scrambling to get into the best shape of her life before the big day. I started doing Pure Barre Monday morning and I just had my 3rd class today. This workout mixes Pilate's, yoga and ballet for one of the best workouts I have ever done.
Once upon a time, I was a runner. Once upon a time, I was a gym rat. And then there was present day where my workout consisted of bringing the frozen daiquiri to my mouth and the only sweat I was breaking was from the sun beating down on the patio I was so eloquently sitting at. Needless to say..... things have happened in the midsection area- bad things.
I did my research and I was determined to find a workout that I would stick with. 9 months is a long time to stay dedicated and I would hate to lose weight, get my dress altered, gain weight and then look like a link of sausage on my wedding day. Not quite the look I am going for. Imagine that visual, walking down the aisle.
It may be too early to tell but I think I have found something that I really enjoy. I still plan on walking the mutt everyday and have started to make much more conscious decisions in the kitchen.
I have decided that I am not going to weigh myself. The batteries burned out on that bad boy a few months ago and I have not missed him. I have been known to obsess on what the number is and this time I just want to make healthy decisions and I know the results that I want, will come.
They say you start seeing results within 5-8 classes of Pure Barre. I have to say after just 3 classes my energy level is through the roof and feeling better about the bod is making dress shopping in 2 weeks that much more exciting!
