Five on Friday: Christmas Tree Edition

I have said before how much I love the story that a Christmas tree tells. It usually gives a snapshot of a family's travels, hobbies and children's art projects. Here are a few of my favorite ornaments that hang on our tree every year.

Our first Christmas 2012

This is actually my first Christmas ornament from 1985... but the saying couldn't be more true

This would be the Baby's First Christmas ornament I would be showing if Lenox would get their act together (if your reading this, I am still waiting.)

A memento from our honeymoon

for the mutt.

Not an ornament but still wonderful.

Special Moments

There's something so special about the first snowfall of the year. Magical almost. Now obviously Mandeville didn't get any snow this past week but St. Louis did and it just makes me so homesick. I pray mother nature works with us and gives us a bit of snow when we are back for Christmas... even if just a few flurries.

While there was no snow here to relish in, the weekend was filled with special moments nonetheless.

Friday morning we woke up to find that St Nick had made a stop at our house!

Harrison may need to invest in bigger shoes :)

Friday night we raced to the Christmas tree lot to get our tree for the year. So....  growing up, decorating the tree is a big deal in our family. Its a family affair and there's always a party that goes a long with it. The original plan was to do our party Wednesday... well someone had a different idea. Harrison was not having any of it. So we switched it to Friday. Everything was going smoothly, Christmas carols were playing, ornaments were going on and thennnnnn the flu hits Harrison. Poor thing got sick halfway through. So the tree has a few less ornaments on there but still so pretty. I love the story a Christmas tree tells.

poor thing just lost his lunch but crazy mom had to snap a quick picture in front of the tree.

We spent the weekend pretty much under the radar after that. Showered just to get back into pajamas. We watched Christmas movies, made chili, took naps and watched football. I ran out Saturday evening to run a few errands and got Harrison a walker. I never understood how happy you can be when you see how happy your child is until the moment we slipped that little hiney into the seat. He literally squeals with excitement.

10 and 2, bud.

Harrison Month 5 Update

Oh boy, this was a busy month. You are trying just about everything and are moments away from scooting and sitting up. We started you on food a few days after you turned 4 months and you are up to 5 foods in your oh so refined palette. We have stuck mainly to vegetables but recently added banana and you LOVE them.

You love love love "sugars". You get the biggest smile on your face when you know they are coming. So much lovin' to go around.

Warmer weather has stuck around a bit longer than usual which is good because you just love to be outside. I mean really who wouldn't when outside means you get to wear shades like those.

You have your days when you refuse to nap. One day you just weren't going to no matter what. By mid afternoon you sat on the couch lifeless until the nap ended up winning the battle.

We set up your highchair but don't use it all of the time yet. You are more focused on eating the tray than your meal. You look like such a big boy in there it just kills me!

You and Mac have officially bonded. I wouldn't tell you this to your face but I think you like Mac more than Mac likes you. Don't worry though... he'll come around. He is patient though and allows you to grab, poke and "kiss"/eat his ears.

We will catch the two of you having your moments. He tries to lick the drool off your face and hands and you try to get a good grasp on those big lips of his.

yes, that is your drool hanging down off your chin. And there is more where that came from. trust me.

before bed snuggles

You found your feet. And you love them. "Always keep them close by" is your motto.

Your quick. Like, REALLY quick. Daddy set you down unstrapped. I found you seconds later belly down, half off with your feet just flappin in the wind.

Harrison, we love more than we thought possible. You are hilarious sweet and so loving. Watching your personality come out more and more each day has been so fun. We are so proud of you and can't wait to see what each new day holds.

Twice Baked Sweet Potatoes

Twice Baked Sweet Potatoes
adapted from Spoon for Bacon
(serves 4)

2 Sweet Potatoes
1/4 cup butter (melted)
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 cup feta (crumbled- I used the really crumbled part of the container vs the large chunks)
2 tablespoons milk (if your going all out- whole milk would be best)
2 cloves minced garlic
Salt and Pepper to taste

For Garnish
Crumbled feta
chopped pecans (if you have more time on your hands, toasted pecans would really make a difference here)

Heat oven to 450 degrees

1. Scrub potatoes and cut lengthwise in half, place cut sides down onto a foil lined cookie sheet. Bake 30-35 minutes or until tender.

3. Lower heat on your oven to 375 degrees.

4. Scoop out the flesh of both sweet potatoes, making sure to not tear the skins.

5.  Mix warm sweet potatoes with butter, feta, brown sugar, milk and garlic.

6. Return sweet potato mixture to the "shells" and bake for another 10-12 minutes.

7. Garnish with feta and pecans

If feta isn't your thing, these would just as good substituting with marshmallows to go for an all over sweet taste. However, I would maybe omit the garlic.

If feta is your thing and you really want to play on the sweet and salty bit, chopped crispy bacon would be just as wonderful. Certainly a fun dish you can play with.

Fun at the Pumpkin Patch

A couple of weekends ago we ventured out to a local pumpkin patch. It was their first year and I don't think they were expecting the crowds they got so they were a bit sparse on actual pumpkins, but nonetheless it was fun.

Before we headed out... spitting image of his dad!

Harrison wasn't sure about the train ride. He was concerned a majority of the time

There was a petting zoo with some pigs, a turkey and well really just a lot of pigs

These were the pigs they used in the pig race... Kevin Bacon, Piggy Spears and the other two I can't remember their names.

And the few pumpkins they had left.

A fun fall day.

Five on Friday

:one: I die. Halloween is truly so much more fun with a puppy dog.

:two: I ate my body weight in Halloween candy. An embarrassing, shameful amount. I'm going to need to step up my game. 1 measly mile isn't going to cut it. (but lord that mile was miserable- i refuse to believe that once upon a time I ran 13 at one time)

:three: It is taking everything in me to realize that buying a coat for a child that he can't wear until he is 5 is stupid. But oh how bad I want to snag this adorable one for Harrison.

:four: Abita Pecan Ale. Fan flipping tastic. And if we are comparing their seasonal beers.... WAY  better than strawberry

:five: In light of Halloween being over, is that not the cutest bottom ever?

Five on Friday

Warning: this one contains a lot of food :)

:one: Twice baked sweet potatoes. Um delicious. I found a recipe on Pinterest and when I took everything out to make them, I realized that I was not a fan of all of the ingredients so I took out some things and added others and they were fantastic!! I'll try and think about what I did and share with everyone.

:two: Moving onto food item number 2 - Salted Caramel Chocolate Pecan Pie. Soo good. This is Southern Living's cover recipe and it is worth every monumental calorie. I am not a pecan pie person and this blew me away. I made all of the caramel that it called for and didn't even put half of it on there and I still think it was a little heavy on the caramel.

:three: I very recently did the pic monkey upgrade. Its like a dummy's version of Photoshop and its only $33 a year. I haven't gone through any of the tutorials yet but simply played around and actually made Harrison look a little yellow with the sun glow feature (oops). Here is a little before and after from the little dinking around I did. Got rid of an electrical tower and some people and made my son look jaundice.

:four: Fall weather is finally here! I broke down this year (with the help of my mom. thanks, mom) and finally invested in a good pair of boots. It seemed I was always having to buy a new pair every year so hopefully now, these will last me a while. FYI- Nordstrom carries the wide calf NOT Saks... as I was told by the jerk salesman that Saks only carries sizes that the GENERAL public can wear. ummm, thanks for saying I have big legs- I hope you work on commission.

:five: Ben Rector's new CD. In love. Second best thing to silence these days.
